MREA16 has been designed to test the hypothesis that the Gulf of Taranto large-scale circulation reverses in certain periods of the year, from anticyclonic, as found in the MREA14 cruise to cyclonic. The cruise actually verified that such a reversal occurred in the period June-July 2017 with respect to October 2014. MREA16 cruise also used a multi-disciplinary mapping approach that allowed the collection of (i) near surface current conditions with an innovative ADCP system and (ii) optical properties of sea surface with radiometric surface measurements.
